Edward Paul Abbey (January 29, 1927 – March 14, 1989) was an American author and essayist known for his advocacy of environmental issues, criticism of public land policies, and anarchist political views. His popular works include the novel The Monkey Wrench Gang and the non-fiction work Desert Solitaire. He also wrote several acclaimed books of non-fiction including The Journey Home, Abbey's Road, and One Life at a Time, Please. He was an outspoken advocate of wilderness preservation and was a frequent speaker at environmental rallies and meetings. He was also a noted critic of suburban sprawl and of many public land policies.
