A.J. Muste (1885-1967) was a Dutch-American clergyman and political activist. He was a leading figure in the pacifist movement of the twentieth century and a major force in the civil rights, labor and anti-war movements. He was a leader of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, a pacifist group, and was one of the founders of the War Resisters League. He was also active in the labor movement, working with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) to organize workers and fight for better wages and working conditions. He was also a major figure in the civil rights movement, working with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other activists to end segregation and promote racial justice. He was a strong advocate for non-violent civil disobedience and was arrested multiple times for his activism.
