A member of the Democratic Party, Abercrombie served as a member of the Hawaii House of Representatives from 1975 to 1979 and in the Hawaii State Senate from 1980 to 1986. He was first elected to Congress in 1986 and served 10 consecutive terms. During his time in Congress, he was a member of the New Democrat Coalition and a close ally of former President Barack Obama. Following his retirement from Congress, Abercrombie ran for and won the 2010 Hawaii gubernatorial election. He served one term as Governor of Hawaii, leaving office in 2014.
