Sir Henry Morgan, a Welsh privateer, plantation owner, and later Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica, became wealthy through his raids on Spanish settlements and shipping. Much of his early life remains a mystery, but he rose to prominence in the 1660s and 1670s, conducting successful and lucrative raids across the Caribbean before being appointed as a Knight Bachelor and serving as the Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica.
